What People Don't Know About Amsoil
I was going through some old Action News issues and found this very interesting article and
thought I would share it with you. Over the years I have had to deal with a few so called oil "experts" just like
Al Amatuzio has in this article and at some point or another you may also, in which case this will be useful
information. I've had dozens of people reply to this exact email thanking me for sending it to them.

From the President`s Desk...
I was enjoying myself at a wedding reception a few months ago when one of the guests struck up a conversation by
letting me know that he didn`t like AMSOIL motor oils and would never use them or recommend them. I was polite,
listening patiently for as long as I could stand it, but he had a bit too much to drink and was not going to drop
the subject until I responded.
I asked this fellow what he knew about motor oils. He said he was a mechanic and knew everything there was to
know about oils. I thought that was unlikely. While a mechanic may know a lot about machinery, not many would claim
to be experts on motor oils. I asked this fellow a simple question about motor oil. I asked if he knew what the "W"
meant on 10W-40 motor oil. He couldn`t tell me.
So much for being an expert. The "W" means Winter. Actually, this fellow didn`t really need to be an expert to
do his job, but he should have been a little less opinionated, or at least had some basis in fact for his opinions
about AMSOIL lubricants. I have no problem dealing with people with baseless opinions about oils. I`ve been doing
that for almost thirty years (although much less frequently in recent years). This guy actually asked me for a job
before our conversation ended.
As AMSOIL Dealers, we all have to deal with the so called experts from time to time. Sometimes they are people
who are simply ignorant about oils and have opinions based on false assumptions. Sometimes they are people with an
ax to grind who purposely spread misinformation. Sometimes they know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody
who had their engine "ruined" by synthetic oil, and enjoy spreading the story. Wherever these "experts" are coming
from, it`s best that you know the facts so you can tell it like it is.
For starters, no properly formulated, properly filtered, properly applied motor oil, synthetic or petroleum, has
ever ruined a properly maintained engine, period. I often refer to Federal Mogul`s Engine Bearing Service Manual
1803EB, where the results of studying over 7,000 case histories on engine bearing failure are detailed. What were
their findings? Dirt causes 43.3% of all bearing distress in an engine. Other causes include insufficient
lubrication, bearing misassembly or misalignment, overloading, corrosion, etc., but dirt is absolutely the major
culprit.
Dirt in an engine may come from many sources. Airborne dirt enters through the air filter. Machinings left
during engine manufacture are classified as dirt. Engine wear produces its own kind of dirt in the form of metal
particles. Any and all of this dirt can cause bearing distress if it is not filtered out of circulation. That`s why
it is so important to use an AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter and why we highly recommend the use of our incredibly
effective by-pass oil filter. They keep our oils clean, and clean oil cannot hurt an engine!
An excellent example of how clean oil performs was demonstrated by Haywood Gray. Keeping his AMSOIL Motor Oil
clean allowed him to run his Mack E7-400 engine 409,000 miles without an oil change. That`s twenty times the
recommended change interval! When his engine was disassembled and inspected by Dick Maltby, an independent engine
rater, all the parts were determined to be suitable for continued use. That`s not a rumor. That`s not an opinion.
It`s documented. It`s fact. Most of those parts with 409,000 miles on them were reassembled right back into the
engine, saving thousands of dollars.
Now don`t get me wrong. Bad things can happen to good oil. It can get diluted with fuel. It can become
contaminated with anti-freeze. It can be improperly filtered. It can be allowed to drop to insufficient levels. It
can be cooked in an overheated engine. A person only needs to use a little common sense to avoid problems. For
instance, we all know a petroleum oil won`t last as long in service as a synthetic. If someone attempts to run
petroleum oil for 25,000 miles and something goes wrong with the engine, blame the person, not the oil.
If you hear that someone said our oil or any other oil "ruined an engine," you can be pretty sure that statement
was made by an idiot. Oil doesn`t ruin engines. Not paying attention ruins engines. If a motorist uses a little
common sense, uses a high quality motor oil like AMSOIL, and follows a normal maintenance program including
replacing the oil and filter at our recommended levels, they are going to enjoy outstanding results.
We`ve been satisfying customers with great products for almost thirty years. In doing so, AMSOIL has become on
of the largest blenders and marketers of synthetic fluids in this country. We were the first, all the rest
followed, and we don`t need to take any guff from self-proclaimed "experts" who don`t know the first thing about
motor oils. Those days should be long gone by now! Unfortunately, it seems they`re not.
